I didn't know this until @Nilotic made it known but one of the main grievances the colonial settlers had with the British when they had their little "revolution" was that the crown signed treaties with the natives promising there would no further westward expansion beyond the east coast and it's environs. Cadaan settlers found this unconscionable and felt they had a right to expand and displace "inferior" people.

As most already know, the Anglo-American people during those times wished to expand their country to the Pacific coast. After the Mexican-American War, the Anglos could very well have annexed the whole of Mexico but decided not to because it was a country filled with Brown people they deemed inferior. Therefore, they decided to only annex Mexico's former northern territories that were sparsely populated that were ripe for Anglo settlement.

In short, Anglo-Americans were far more aggressive & expansionist than their British counterparts that once ruled over them.
