If you really want a car, then get a pickup truck, used of course, but if you want a toy, then by all means, any brand, esp. Japanese ones, will do for longevity, but if you are after a bit of a feel good factor, then Chevy, or Ford - the new hybrid models, like the Ford Fusion, are great rides.
Electric:
If you could afford, then consider an electric car; I recently rented a Kia Niro for a month, for I was considering to replace my truck, and the Maverick hybrid (40 miles to the gallon for a truck is remarkable) was on back order, and was very impressed with its agility, horse power, and road experience. 350 miles per full charge, and could top it at night for free in most cities, if not at your home (you will have to upgrade the garage outlet), speeds to 50 miles in a second (would not recommend it for a first time driver, unless very mature) - now you can not beat that!
The one that last longer and is in your price range.
