Where do dark lips come from ?

Me, my sister and my African side of family have dark purplish lips. A lot of people find unique. Western media and most AAs, unless they’re very dark are portrayed with pink or red lips. Where’s it from ?

All tissues have varying levels of pigmentation. Lip color is mainly genetic, with the exception of things like smoking and chapped lips building up dense dead skin on the outer lip.
