Usually when we think of diplomatic recognition we are talking about whether to recognise or not recognise the existence of a sovereign state eg Somaliland, Kosovo and Abkhazia to name a few. However diplomatic recognition also refers to whether or not to officially recognise which self declared government is the rightful government of a current recognised, de jure state eg like what we see in Myanmar and Afghanistan.
