Overweight and obesity among African immigrants in Oslo.

Background

Norway is experiencing an increase in overweight/obese adults, with immigrants from developing countries carrying a heavy burden. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Somali immigrants in Oslo.

Findings

A cross-sectional study involving 208 respondents aged 25 and over was conducted among Somali immigrants in Oslo, using a structured questionnaire. Prevalence of overweight/obesity varied by gender, with women having a significantly higher prevalence (66%) than men (28%). The mean BMI for females and males were 27.4 and 23.6, respectively. Similarly, 53% of women and 28% of men were abdominally obese. In a logistic regression analysis, both generalized and abdominal obesity were significantly associated with increasing duration of residence in Norway, and with being less physically active.

Conclusion

Public health policymakers should facilitate an environment that enables Somali immigrants, particularly women, to lead healthy lifestyles. In this time of epidemiological transition, health education in the areas of physical exercise and healthy eating should be a major focus for working with new immigrants.

Major contributors of obesity among the Somalis are;

# Oily foods

# Lack of exercises

# Child birth.

I don't eat Somali food (pasta+rice and meat), therefore, she has to change her diet.

I'm active and do exercise religiously both in the gym or playing soccer and futsal. She has to find her own exercise regiment.

I don't intend to breed children, I will adopt (given that she agrees with), there are no excuses for gaining weight because of pregnancy and child birth.

There are other causes too like illnesses of thyroid and other illnesses. These weight gain beyond her control doesn't mean that she lost her marbles. You've to be there for her and love her. Weight gain and obesity should be viewed as a major factor of health risks and not a beauty issue. It should start with children.

I will simply marry someone who obviously cares about their health, and wants to stay fit and healthy. Most females get super fat after their pregnancy, so i will advice her to hit the gym while i take care of the child.

A Somali friend of mine used to say, I found a great looking slim chick but I need to see her mum before I ask her to marry me because obesity is inherited. He couldn’t find any slim Somali mother and finally married a girl from Mauritius. She gained weight and divorced her. He’s on his third wife.

After years of marriage, looks and body shape changes, but the person is still the same.

I've heard a story about a bigger girl who married this guy that was an avid gym goer.

She wanted to get fit but he would sabotage her efforts. It forced her to lie about what she ate and secretly hit the gym.

When she got fit, he was dumped.
