I always think of this. I think it would be really interesting to see. From the little I’ve watched of Arday, the actors were very good and the plot lines were interesting. Inshallah when the country gets better and things of priority are improved, we will see our own Somali cinema surge.
But my opinions are:
1. Actors should be speaking in Somali STRICTLY. No Arabic, English or bastardised Somali. The only time they should be using loan words is when an alternative word isn’t available. It would be beautiful to see dialogue or story telling be as rich as gabaays or qarami songs.
2. I think it should be aimed at both the locals and international audiences. Locals so that they can have people that look like them and stories that they can relate to reflected on their screens. And international audiences for soft power like SK is doing, but I’d personally love to see Somali cinema curated for Somali audiences more.
3. Since Xamar is the capital, I think Somali cinema should be located elsewhere. E.g. Mumbai is associated with bollywood whereas LA is associated with Hollywood. It would be nice if we had a city (preferably costal) that would have the same association and then maybe make it a tourist destination (but with strict rules to avoid exploitation).
4. I would personally want all genres to be explored, but I love thriller and detective shows a lot so seeing a Somali detective/thriller show or movie would be a dream. Coming of age, sci fi and horror be fantastic too. Deg dheer as a horror film >>>>>> Also, a Somali superhero is needed!!!! Imagine cigaal shidaad as a reluctant and cowardly hero
5. We should have our very own Hayes code 🫣 I think this might be a little dangerous and could be exploited by politicians to censor media critical of Somali politics, but a Hayes code where explicate sex, kissing scenes and nudity are banned would be nice. Most sex scenes I see add nothing to the story. And yeah we are Muslim, so very unlikely to happen, but I’ve seen Muslim countries add stuff like that to their movies… I would rather not see that ew.
What about you guys? What would you like to see
