What was the Somali diet like ???

You can be fat and still be malnourished it's about the nutrients you eat not the quantity. Historically Somalis ate meats, and alot of dairy. Modern diet today is mainly carbohydrates such as pasta, rice which have add no nutritional benefit apart from fiber.

Don't forget the local native fruits

In the Baadiya, I heard some people use to drink only milk for days in times of drought when food and water scarce. Old Somalis had a David Goggins level of robustness. This why you get those reports of Somali warriors being described as some of the more resilient people on earth.

We know baasto was an Italian import, a maladaptive one at that. You will end up with skinny legs and a protruding belly (avoid this menace). I can only speak for the north since I know more about it. Anyway, the English never ate bariis and had no substantial impact on Somaliland (especially in the way of cuisine). Everyone knows those munchie cakes have bland food. Bariis was eaten by Somalis prior to their arrival particularly in more urbanized areas like Zeylac. I should still add that bariis (white rice) is also a refined grain so it’s not good for you.

If you are talking about what foods that are "not accultured" as in not borrowed. Gharle presented it quite well. Nomads appear to be the heart of Somali culture. That is well established by now. The archetypal Somali mostly consumed unrefined grain, maize, meat and milk (camel only) they did not have sugar or processed grain in their diet. In fact most Somalis didn't consume meat that frequently particularly among reer badiye it was rather scarce, eaten on an ad hoc basis.
I think Somalis actually looked physically better in the past compared to (today). It's evident from their better teeth (with no need for orthodontic work) and better facial symmetry (courtesy of examining older photo graphs). That's normally the case when your diet is rich in fat soluble vitamins A,E,D,K. Well at least according to Medical Anthropologists (traditional food staples are a must).

Perhaps Somalis are claiming they are mixed because of the foreign elements in their cuisine. In case you didn't know just because you make somali falafel aka bagiya doesn't make you Arab, and eating sambusa and cambabur doesn't make you Indian. I think Somalis aren't caadi because they are off their traditional foods and garb, hence, they are off their culture. It's been a long time and they need to revert (for their health and genetic integrity). Amiin.

Might I add that was prior to the mass consumption of Khat by Somalis (it was once a drug of choice exclusively used among religious scholars, it cascaded down to working men and prostitutes and then everyone including livestock.) That herb/drug when used long-term ruins your appearance.

You should read "Deep Nutrition - Why your genes need traditional foods" by Catherine and Luke Shanahan for some perspective.

The good teeth is also probably because of miswak use
