I'm from Somalia and speak French.

I can say first hand that the French have a cultural control on each of their former colonies to this day. Nearly every French colony speaks French, uses a form of Francs, still use the Baccalaureate education system and send their best talent to France who then gives them French citizenship.

On top of that, the French plundered their cultural artefacts, resources and dominate the economy. In each former colony, speaking French is equated to lifelong success.

I would never wish any of this on Somalia.

I’ve always been confused by this, I understand majority of them speak French but are they teaching that as an official language in school?

ok this is Djibouti in a nutshell with languages i know this because i been there. At the shops Somali/ Yemeni Arabic at home Somali/ Yemeni Arabic/Afar. At school French/Arabic and Somali/Afar is mostly prohibited. Public Somali/Afar/Yemeni Arabic. Languages differentiate from neighbourhoods also.
e.g
Ambouli 1= Yemeni Arabic
Kharton= Somali
Balbala= Afar
Heron=French/Ethiopian

Yemeni Arabic is not taught at school but at private schools for Yemenis
All languages are used on the news
RT5 (kids channel) is in French
RT3 is is in Somali
RT2 is in Afar
Arabic Channels are from KSA
