What is the average age Somalis move out?

And are they shamed for moving out earlier or later? A lot of my cousins are still living with their parents in their late 20s early 30s and I don't want to turn out like them man-children :jcoleno:
My goal is to move out by age 22. I'm 19

Maybe like 23, my sister moved when she got married. Although If I do move just means less
chores.
Depends, my parents always chastised my sisters if they wanted to move out earlier and how it would be ceeb and stuff "wait until you get married".

No one moves out in my family. We just take over the bills. :deadpeter::deadpeter::deadpeter:
How old is your oldest sibling?

Yeah that's also a good age. I finish my bachelor's at 21 (got into school a year early) and applying for internships right now. My goal is to get a job straight out of uni and save up enough to live in an apartment by the time I'm 22. Women definitely are less pressured to become independent but everyone's different I guess

lol good luck with that. Housing will eventually dip but even then it'll go back up after.

Gen Z is fucked when it comes to housing. You're going to have to move to a really small town that has cheap housing.

What about an apartment?
even then, that's expensive.

You're most likely going to have to rent and that's way worse than staying with your parents.

The reason why your relatives are 20-30s and still living with their parents is because they're saving up/investing so they can buy their own place.

It's a better strategy than wasting money and not even owning the property

Eh I still pay half the bills and buy my own groceries/take care of tuition with my current part time job, is adding a couple hundred per month really that bad?

lol couple hundred. If you live in one of the major cities, monthly rent will be gravitating towards $1500-2000 a month and that's for a basement.

If you're talking a full house , then $4000-5000.

somlis unlike westerners don't see it as shameful to stay with their parents till maybe even into their 30s. they help them with house work and the bills, and just provide company ig. most males even bring their wife to their parent's house and live there when they get married (am talking about back home). This culture of shaming your kid to move out if they are 18, is both messed up and alien to us :)

Not a clue, but I think it’s great to see young Somalis living alone nowadays without the pressure of marriage. More Somalis to live independently in the coming years inshallah!

I think the whole "move out at 18" is an American thing due to college. Most of my cadaan European friends still live with their parents, they move out at 22/23 when their more adopted to adulthood.

We get this topic every week.

I make enough to live on my own but why do that ? Better to live with parents and siblings. They own a home and we have personal space so its not that bad wallahi. Always help with bills tho don’t be a parasite to your parents.

Here is my humble advise.

1. As a woman before marriage, there is no reason as to why you should move out unless you find a great job abroad or in another city. Also, it’s smart to save up for a deposit get on the property ladder and then rent out the property. The apartment/house will pay itself off. You’ll have money coming in and when you get married, you can move in with your man and maybe buy another house together. Come on ladies, use this time to save up and invest, invest, invest. Don’t be wasting money via renting.

2. As a man, you have no business moving out as you should be using these years to save for a deposit so you can get on the property ladder and save up for marriage. You have wedding expenses, Mehr and being the provider in the future. Save up and stay home

3. My advice might seem old fashioned but the reason why I’m giving this advise is because the cost of living is rising, rent is astronomical. You should be trying to save as much as possible. Why are you out here paying for other people’s mortgages by renting some next persons house?

Also, Somali parents obviously expect their kids to contribute once they start working. It’s hard giving money to your parents AND renting and buying bills at the same time when you’re young and at the start of your career.
