What is Liberalism?

I thought it was an American concept? europeans were in monarchies up until like 100 or so years ago, unless your talking all the way back in greek times

@Tukraq

The idea was floated long before that era. European philosophers were debating such ideology in the 17th Century. I vividly remember in my political philosophy class in high school when our British teacher became so excited whenever he mentioned John Locke. The industrial revolution gave birth to economic liberalism in the 19th century and that’s where the United States thinkers made a great contribution.

There was no attack. I just asked "what is liberalism" and as liberals do you behaved in a way and continue to behave in a way that is mindlessly belligerent towards anyone who thinks differently.

You are not interested in giving a straight answer or simply answering the question. You have not answered the question nor do I expect you to, you are simply interested in attacking me due to me not having your beliefs, you're not interested in any real sort of intellectual discussion. There's no point in expecting you to answer the question. If someone is able to give a coherent explanation of what liberalism is, I doubt it will be you.

@Omar del Sur

Sxb, I explained the complexity of the term because the word has taken a different meaning nowadays and that’s why most people will either associate with political parties (we have in Australia a political party called the Liberal Party) rather than with the ideology, or they might simplistically view it as ideas of liberals (Left) vs conservatives (Right) within the functions of our contemporary politics.

This simplistic definition fits best

“Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on liberty, consent of the governed and equality before the law.”

From the wiki:

Liberalism is a political position based around liberty.

Liberty is doing what you want.

As a political system, doing what you want, while still having a government would require certain characteristics of the government.

1. Limited government.
2. Consent of those who the government oversees.
3. Equality.

So the reason why there are human rights, capitalism, certain "freedoms", like freedom of religion, sexuality, speech, press, protest, etc.

The society is made in such a way, that the people can live the life they want.

those "philosophers" didnt come up with anything, it was a concept in ancient Greece

@Tukraq

Ok Mr Contrarian, you should’ve mentioned the French because thinkers like Montesquieu played a major role in formulating the ideology. Having said that, I know that you’re confused between democracy and liberalism. The ancient Greeks arguably invented democracy but not liberalism.

what differs liberalism from greek democracy? considering it was representative and gave there citizens the right to vote and decide? basically nothing
