The Imamate of Abyssinia makes for a good what if YouTube video. How would the Italio - Ethio war go out? What would colonization in the horn look like? 🤔

I think we would have expanded further, scholars would have come from all over the world and we would have become Somali Andalusia. At the same time, we could have fought the Ottomans and also seized the Hijaz and become a major Islamic empire with the Ottomans.

Imam Ahmed underestimated the strength and power of the Portuguese army in Ethiopia. The Ottomans had a lot of experience dealing with the Portuguese military and won many decisive battles against them. If Imam Ahmed handed over the body of Cristavo da Gama to the Ottomans, the Turks could have pressured Cristavo da Gama to tell them vital intelligence information about Portuguese military secrets in Ethiopia and the Red Sea. This would have been a victory for both the Ottomans and Imam Ahmed. But qadr allah wa masha fa'al.

The majority of the elite contingent that was sent to bolster Imam Ahmed's forces in the battle of Wofla deserted to Yemen. The majority of the elite contingent departed for Yemen when Imam Ahmed refused to hand over the body of Cristavo da Gama. Only 200 Turks remained behind. If the elite Turkish contingent remained at the battle of Wayna Daga, Imam Ahmad would have definitely won. All of Abyssinia would have been under the Adal Empire.

We'd be the largest ethnic group in Africa for starters. Assuming we Somalizied majority of the Oromos and Habeshas.

Over 120 million people speaking Somali, we'd be the lingua franca of east africa easy.

We'd be having a seat at the table of BRICS instead of the useless colonial state of South Africa.

The possibilities are endless. We'd be on par with Iran and Turkey in terms of regional influence in the Muslim world and on the African continent the clear hegemonic power.

Imam ahmad really should've put his pride aside and given the head of cristavo da gama to the Ottomans as requested instead of ending up in a diplomatic spat with them leading to just him vs the still powerful Portuguese and destroyed ethiopian army.

Ahmed cut off christavao head in the heat of the moment when christavao insulted the prophet. Also Ahmed definitely could’ve won during Wayna Daga even after the Turks left his army only disintegrated after he died

There wouldn't be any oromo in this time line. They were one of many lowland east Cushite tribes dotted on the border of somalis.

Somali during the time of Ahmad Gurey controlled hararghe and bale and we had agriculturalists that populated the entire region and with this victory Somalis would end up expanding onto Amhara.

Also, with a cental state the horn would be one of the most powerful regions in the world. We'd likely expand to Sudan and perhaps even Yemen like the old Axumites.

I see a scenario where all that expansion territory vanishes once the European powers arrived to Africa and carved us out like they did with the Ottomans leaving us with the Somali heartland being present day Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.

I hate this alternate BS. Imam Ahmed did exactly what he needed to do, he destroyed Abyssinian power for centuries to come. It’s not his fault that his successors didn’t exploit the opportunity by maintaining Muslim unity in the Horn to permanently subjugate the Christians and subdue the Oromo threat, and instead allowed the Abyssinians to retreat into their highlands and lick their wounds until the European Empires in the 19th century reached the shores of the Horn and empowered them.

May Imam Ahmed rest in tranquility, our Lion of Adal.

“The Adalite architecture with its beautiful carvings is the most beautiful on the continent.”
“The Adliya Sultanate expanded under the leadership of Imam Ahmed and took control of Yemen and the Hijaz. They defeated the Ottomans and became the superpower on the continent.”

You don't understand. We aren't talking ill of him but it's fact a few of his mistakes led to the Imam not being able to fully establish the empire and all of its conquered territories and so after Ahmad Gurey's death Adal retreated and fell To Oromo hordes.
