a mix of crack war on drugs poverty and liberalism
Integration screwed them, they were better off when they were forced to be self reliant and create their own businesses

Smh @Garen everyone has their own communal problems
- Replacing the family unit with government and fathers with foodstamps.
- Decline in African American leadership after the deaths of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King during a period of assimilation.
- Migration out of the south to northern liberal cities and the collapse of industry in cities such as Detroit, Gary, Flint. Lack of economic progress in southern cities continues till this day.
- High abortion rate kept the percentage of African American population from growing which prevented them from significantly influencing national politics.
Indeed you are correct, what should have happened was after the civil rights act was passed they should have continued to listen to people like Malcolm X and the NOI who told AAs to continue to segregate themselves from white people, and other non-black ethnic groups so they could still economically, politically control their own neighborhoods.

Once made leaderless, had their jobs moved overseas (see General Motors and Ford's exodus from Detroit), leading to mass unemployment rates.
