What’s the fate of the Somali Language in the Western World?

I really believe that any child born before 2005 from Somali Parents could speak Somali but it seems this isn’t as much apparent in the new generation of kids, whose parents are Somali but raised in the West.

Back in school I used to see Pakistani boys and girls who sometimes didn’t even know each other engage in conversation in Urdu and I really admired that and wished we’d be like that.

I think they should open Somali Dugsi where they teach kids Somali.

But I see it going down a slop unfortunately.

Not looking good, the average kid today speaks very little Somali, this is mostly the fault of the shortsighted parents who speak English with their kids. I can speak good Somali despite being born and raised in the west, but the kids born after around 2007 generally have a very low level of Somali.

Yh and these parents just resort to “dhaqan celis” as sort of a fixer when they could just fund and open a Somali Dugsi for these things.

Don't know what you talking about your average Somali speak there language compared to other african groups.

I think the Somali language is making a comeback actually with ones under 15. I was at a high school recently and Somali kids were only hanging out with other Somali kids and they were only speaking Somali.

It will go extinct with the raise of somalis born and raised in the west being parents. We don't have a strong community in the uk I noticed.

You don't know nothing as you are Canadian British born and raised Somalis know how to speak there language.

Yeah this is true I learnt a lot about the somali language through TikTok 2021 when I was younger. I had to understand qabil and politics. Then I listen to songs which does actually help but I still can’t speak it well enough but I understand it now

Never used tiktok i learned everything through the reddit and then later reading forum
