The only way it would concern you is if you were a hooyo mataalo. This convo is getting boring nowYou don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.
It's not cultural appropriation but it's not somali culture
That’s the thing though. Why are they bringing Somalis up? We were never apart of the conversation. We literally refer to all their clothes as dhaqan carabeed. Don’t know why they are crying about us in the comments.I see where they are coming from in a sense that the Abaya is indeed from the Khaleejis, and the Elegance company needs to stop lying. Saying it’s been worn by Muslim women for centuries isn’t exactly factual considering it’s recent origins, but Somalis have been wearing it for decades now for modesty reasons, the same reasons why Khaleejis wear it. Before the 70s, Gulf women too didn’t wear it but wore their traditional Kandoras with a long black chador like cloth starting from the head that drapes on top with an opening at the front. The so called abaya is only 50 years old and Somalis have been wearing it for at least 40 years now. I think both sides are wrong,( By both sides I’m talking about that timo jelec Abaya company, NOT Somalis) but what do those Arab girls want? Recognition? To stop others from selling the Abaya which has now become the symbol of modesty for Muslim women around the globe? This is why I don’t understand these conversations and why I don’t understand this discourse. Also, that Abaya company needs to just admit that it is indeed Khaleeji culture but also carry on selling their abayas as they have a right to do, because at the end of the day all groups NOW wear the abaya, so like I said earlier, what do those ‘iTs CulTurAL aPproPriaTiOn’ girlies want?!
Honestly, I’ve had enough of these ‘cultural appropriation’ girls. Some Somali girls are also like that as well and will argue with people like the Oromos and their other neighbors crying about appropriation. Gen Z kids need to get a life including those Arab girls. Oh and people need to also be respectful enough to admit the origins of things.
