I have noticed these strange hair cuts usually on children in old Somali photos. Shaven either in the middle of the head or the sides.

Does anyone know if they had any significance ?

she told me that thats what they used to do with little kids back in the day.My moms super religious now so she said jaahil baanu ahayn

Uneven haircuts like that are seen as mukruh (very disliked) or even haram by many scholars. Not to mention they're pretty ugly so no point.

I thought it was just the hadith about imitating gaalo. But you're right I just read something about it.

For girls, it was done until the age of 8. They would then grow their hair out and braid it until they got married.

When I look at a lot of vintage Somali photos I would notice that a lot of the little girls would have their head mostly shaven, but left with a little patch of hair. Does anyone here know the meaning, and the reasoning behind this?
