Culture Vintage Haircuts

I have noticed these strange hair cuts usually on children in old Somali photos. Shaven either in the middle of the head or the sides.

Does anyone know if they had any significance ?

According to my mom it's to show that you're young and not ready for marriage.
For girls, it was done until the age of 8. They would then grow their hair out and braid it until they got married.

It’s was a common practice in the Nile valley among Afro-Asiatic communities. From Somalia, Ethiopia to Egypt. It means not ready for marriage!

When I look at a lot of vintage Somali photos I would notice that a lot of the little girls would have their head mostly shaven, but left with a little patch of hair. Does anyone here know the meaning, and the reasoning behind this?
