They didn't. They were merely traders of slaves from other African countries and to the Middle East. An intermediary. And of course West Africans sold slaves, they would take prisoners of war from opposing tribes after conflict and sell them. The Europeans didn't just stroll in and take them freely. They had to pay. And while people were captured, they weren't in cities. They were in random areas of the coastline.
