This is actually not that surprising and would end up happening to any person no matter their race, ethnicity or nation.
What simply happened was sensible long term comfort/security based thinking on the Ukrainian woman's part.
In her eyes, she knows that if her husband goes back to join the war effort, either two things will occur:
1. He will die. Thus no man to support her.
2. He will survive, but then would end up like a Viet vet, a man who is behind in setting up his career. Ergo, the support will not be enough.
In both scenarios, the woman would come to the conclusion that marrying a man in a stable nation who can provide for her and her future kids is a more beneficial arrangement.
These Ukrainian guys are literally unlucky because they're in a war.
Another side to this, is that there's already a market for mail order brides from that country. So the idea of marrying a man from a different nationality isn't something that's uncommon with them anyway. They're not endogamous.
