Tired of the weird UK Somali jokes so let’s post positive threads and discuss their educational attainment. I could only find statistics for Somali students in Lambeth (London borough) schools so this will focus on them.

Link to the research I’m using: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf

Somali students in Lambeth typically start out behind their white British peers in primary/elementary school (because of lower english fluency imo) but at GCSE level, they tend to close the gap or outperform white British students despite having higher rates of poverty.

In 2023, the combined reading, writing and maths average of KS2 (ages 7-11) Somali students was 63% (reading was 77%, writing was 72% and maths was 80%) whereas white British students combined average was 78% (reading was 88%, writing was 85% and maths was 85%).

(page 10, TABLE 3A, KS2 attainment: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2018, the combined reading, writing and maths average of KS2 (ages 7-11) Somali students was 72% and 68% in 2019.

(page 10 TABLE 3, KS2 attainment: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2016, 81% of Somali students in Lambeth achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths GCSE’s in comparison to 67% of White British pupils (Somali students outperformed by 14 percentage points).

IMG_7990.jpeg

(81% of somali students achieved grades 9-4 in 2016 vs 67% of white british students, page 11, TABLE 4: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2018, 78% of Somali students in Lambeth achieved grades 9-4 (A-C) in English and Maths GCSE’s in comparison to 63% of White British pupils (Somali students outperformed by 15 percentage points).

IMG_7991.jpeg

(78% of somali students achieved grades 9-4 vs 63% of white british students, page 11, TABLE 4: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2022, 67% of Somali students achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths GCSE’s in comparison to 65% of White British students. At GCSE level, Somali students in Lambeth have outperformed white British students in 3 out of 6 years (2016, 2018 and 2022, the research in this section focuses on 2016-2023).

IMG_7950.jpeg

(page 11: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

Among FSM (free school meals aka a good way of measuring deprivation) students, Somali FSM students achieved better than white british FSM students in 2023 with 61% of Somali FSM students achieving GCSE grades 9-4 in English and Maths in comparison to 38% of white British FSM students (Somali students outperformed by 23 percentage points). The national average for all students (including non-FSM students) was 61% so Somali FSM students in Lambeth matched the national average for all students despite higher socioeconomic disadvantages and outperformed their white British FSM peers.

(page 16, TABLE 10: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

IMG_7952.jpeg

(the national average for 2023 for all students is 61% as you can see at the bottom)

In 2023, 72% of Somali non-FSM students in Lambeth achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths GCSE’s while 79% of white British non-FSM students achieved grades 9-4 in English and Maths so there’s a 7% gap. Somali non-FSM students in Lambeth outperform the national average of 61% by 11 percentage points.

For reference, in 2023 Somali non-FSM students outperformed the national average for non-FSM students which was 71% and in particular, they outperformed Pakistani non-FSM students (69%), black non-FSM students (70%), mixed white-black caribbean non-FSM students (61%), white British non-FSM students (70%), white other (70%) and were on par with mixed white-black african non-FSM students (72%).

(percentage of pupils getting a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and maths, by ethnicity and eligibility for free school meals, 2022-2023: GCSE English and maths results - GOV.UK Ethnicity facts and figures)

In 2023, 61% of Somali FSM students achieved grades 9-4 and outperformed the national FSM average (42%) as well as Pakistani FSM students (54%), black caribbean FSM students (41%), black FSM students (55%), mixed white-asian FSM students (52%), mixed white-black african FSM students (50%), mixed white-black caribbean FSM students (36%), mixed other FSM students (50%), white british FSM students (35%), white irish FSM students (36%) and white other FSM students (49%). However, these are all national averages while the Somali student statistics are from one borough only but I believe this should be accurate for all UK Somalis.

(percentage of pupils getting a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and maths, by ethnicity and eligibility for free school meals, 2022-2023: GCSE English and maths results - GOV.UK Ethnicity facts and figures)

The FSM gap is a term used to refer the difference in educational outcomes between students that are eligible for FSM and students that are not. Going by 2023’s results, 72% of non-FSM Somali students had a 9-4 grade in their English and Maths GCSE’s in comparison to 61% of FSM Somali students; that’s an 11 point FSM gap. For comparison, the FSM gap between Chinese students is 14 points, for Indian students it’s 14 points, for Pakistanis it’s 16 points, for black Africans it’s 20 points, for white British it’s 33 points. So disadvantaged Somali students are achieving closer to their more advantaged peers which is a good thing.

In 2016, the combined average KS1 reading, writing and maths average of Somali students in Lambeth was 75% whereas the combined average for all black African students was 74%. The national average was 71% so Somali students outperformed the national average.

IMG_7975.jpeg

(somali RWM average in 2016 was 75% vs african RWM average at 74%, page 9, TABLE 2: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2022, the average KS1 reading, writing and maths average of Somali students was 71% whereas the african average was 69%. Somali students outperformed both the national average of 64% and the Lambeth average of 68%. I’m assuming the african average counts as Somalis as well, someone correct me if I’m wrong.

(somali RWM average in 2022 was 71% vs african RWM average at 69%, page 9, TABLE 2: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2013, the combined average KS2 reading, writing and maths average of Somali students in Lambeth was 92% whereas the combined average for african students was 90%. Somali students met the Lambeth average of 90% and outperformed the national average of 86%.

IMG_7978.jpeg

(somali average in 2013 was 92% vs 90% for african students, page 10, TABLE 3: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

In 2018, it was 72% for Somali students and 69% for african students; Somali students outperformed the Lambeth average (70%) and the national average (64%).

(somali average in 2018 was 72% vs 69% for african students, page 10, TABLE 3: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-02/Somali_Report_Empirical_Evidence_2023.pdf)

Focusing on KS2 attainment, in 2022 Somali students in Lambeth had an average of 76% in reading, 83% in writing, 87% in maths. In comparison, african students (combined group of multiple ethnicities) had an average of 77% in reading, 71% in writing and 72% in maths; Somali students outperform their writing and maths average.

Polish students had an average of 84% in reading, 76% in writing and 85% in maths; Somali students outperform their writing and maths average. Portuguese students (who I’m guessing are over represented in Lambeth which is why they’re included in this study?) had an average of 71% in reading, 67% in writing and 73% in maths; Somali students outperform them entirely in KS2 attainment (the RWM average for Somali students is 60%, same with africans, while Portuguese RWM average is 52%).

Somali students in Lambeth outperform Portuguese students in Lambeth: Somalis pupils consistently outperform their Portuguese peers at every key stage.

Somali students have outperformed them in KS1 attainment: the average for Somali students in 2013 was 72% vs 62% for Portuguese students, the average for Somali students in 2015 was 78% vs 62% for Portuguese students, in 2019 the average for Somali students 75% vs 67% for Portuguese, in 2022 the average for Somali students was 71% vs 59% for Portuguese students.

Somali students consistently outperform them in KS2 attainment: the RWM (reading, writing, maths) average for Somali students in 2014 was 91% vs 85% for Portuguese students, in 2017 the average was 71% for Somali students and 54% for Portuguese students. It’s like this for every year, I’m just highlighting specific years. For 2023, the KS2 RWM combined average for Somali students was 63% vs 56% for Portuguese students. For KS1, the RWM average for Somali students was 63% vs 58% for Portuguese students.

Separately, in 2022 79% of Somali girls studying in Lambeth achieved grades 9-4 in their English and Maths GCSE; they outperformed the national and Lambeth female average of 67% and 68% respectively and outperformed the other groups in the research (white british, polish, caribbean, portugese) besides africans for that year although again I’m unsure if this category includes Somalis or not.

The census shows that nearly a quarter of Somalis in the United Kingdom are currently at university. 21.7% of Somalis in England and Wales are students right now (in comparison to 7.3% of the England and Wales population so 3x the national average). For reference, 48% of Somalis in the UK are under 21 and the majority of Somalis in the UK were born in England or Wales.

I would say most UK Somalis over 18 are probably in university right now and studying, those who aren’t are probably doing apprenticeships or retaking their exams (gap years), so they are economically inactive because they’re studying. UK Somalis are doing quite well and the next census should be much more interesting and positive.

To achieve all this in just 30 years or one generation is very impressive since we moved to the west as refugees , we started from scratch adapting to new surroundings with a different language compared to other migrants who moved for financial reasons.
