U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar wins DFL endorsement in reelection bid

First-term U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar won the DFL endorsement Sunday to run in the Aug. 11 primary election for a Minneapolis-based congressional seat that has been in Democrats’ hands since 1963.

The party endorsement sets up a primary race with Antone Melton-Meaux, an attorney-mediator and political newcomer whose campaign has been based on a series of critiques of Omar’s stormy first 16-months in Congress.

The DFL balloting was conducted online over a nine-day period after the pandemic made in-person congressional conventions impossible.

ilhan got 65.5% of the vote.

I expected Delegates who are state party insiders would endorse her in a more unanimous fashion, not 65.5% to 30%

The next step, if she wins the primary, would be a cakewalk of a general election. In the future, she should avoid any apperance of scandal and alienating Jewish people and others in Democratic coalition. She can get away with being a socialist if she does not divide her party because her district has 2 or 3 Democrats for every Republican

Melton-Meaux will focus on her verbal gaffes dividing Democrats and her alleged financial misconduct with Mynett. Mr 30% Melton-Meaux will probably her toughest opponent if she she wins and no more allegations scandals/gaffes arise in future election cycles

Primaries are dufficult to forecast or poll, especially for House of Representatives seats. @reerMN how are things in the 5th district? I stand by analysis that Melton-Meaux is the establishment favored candidate running against an incumbent favored by the base of the party the question is who will win
