Perhaps you could also say "ma waxaad uu bahantahay" instead of "ma uu bahantahay". Loogu talogalay/talagalay I guess is just a matter of accent.

Which Somali language news sites do you read, may I ask? Poor writing put me off from many of them.

Thanks sxb. I used to read a lot of BBC Somali, Hiiraan, and Wardheer news. I would also read the various clan websites just to see the various perspectives, but I eventually got tired of the nonsense being spewed by all sides. Nowadays I get most of my news updates from here and Hiiraan. I agree, most of the Somali websites, especially the clan websites have atrocious writing.

We should all aspire to that level of somali, it's a shame I didn't understand a good percentage of what you wrote. Is immersing yourself with the people back home the best way to learn? I've got a really basic level and didn't understand shit when people spoke fast during my visit last summer.

Immersion is the best way to learn any language no doubt. You just need to stay longer next time. But it's not a must, I learned all my af-Soomaali in Canada. The trick is not to reply to your parents and older relatives in English. Force urself to reply to them in Somali no matter how awkward it feels or messed up ur grammar is. Trust me, after a while you'll notice an improvement.

I only speak in Somali when speaking to older family members and relatives. And over the years I picked up a lot of vocab from reading the news in af-Soomaali.
