Trafigura to invest 50 million USD in the first phase

Economic impact

DP World investment multiplier effect

Somaliland firms are investing 3 times as much as international firms

Trafigura, with the full support of the Somaliland Government, will upgrade the Berbera Oil Terminal (BOT) in a phased approach to improve and expand the storage capacity, and eventually facilitate the import of jet fuel and LPG to meet local and regional demand whilst ensuring international health and safety standards.

Plans also include increasing the draft to enable larger vessels to be received and allow local traders more economical import of refined products and access to re-export markets. This will help support the Somaliland Government’s ambition to transform Berbera port as a strategic hub in a region where demand is growing year on year.

In 2019, Ethiopia's hydrocarbon needs amounted to 4.1 million tons.

Let us hope the right protections and control measures are being put in place re: toxic waste dumping, environmental, and human devastation.

------------------------------
Trafigura found guilty of exporting toxic waste

Multinational oil trading company Trafigura produced the toxic waste on board the ship as a result of refining a dirty petroleum product called coker naphtha to mix with gasoline and sell it on as petrol. Trafigura knew the waste was hazardous, but hadn’t figured out how to dispose of it safely.

Trafigura tried and failed to get rid of the waste in five countries: Malta, Italy, Gibraltar, The Netherlands and Nigeria.

Instead, the toxic waste was finally dumped illegally in CΓ΄te d’Ivoire by a local company that Trafigura hired to dispose of it for just US$17,000 – a fraction of the price quoted in the Netherlands. To this day it is still not known where all the waste was dumped.

Ten years ago, the cargo ship the Probo Koala reached the end of a four-month journey that resulted in toxic waste being dumped illegally in CΓ΄te d’Ivoire.

And here is the British gov't connection:
The Conservative leader in the Lords, Lord Strathclyde, is on Trafigura's payroll as a director of its hedge fund, Galena Asset Management, which is based at the firm's Marble Arch office, in Portman House, Oxford Street, London.

A new oil storage terminal has been opened at the port city of Berbera to serve the Horn of Africa region.

Additionally, President Bihi laid the foundation for the forthcoming LPG facility.

The President had earlier opened a new offshore terminal that will enable vessels up to 80,000mt to call Berbera, allowing larger vessels serving regional customers deliver fuel products.

Built to the latest international standards for both liquids and gases, the DOST terminal has received certification for its firefighting, materials and offshore facilities from various international firms such as RINA, UL and Bureau Veritas, attesting to its top-notch quality.

The inaugural phase is ready for operation with a provision for both petrol and diesel storage including a provision for aviation fuel storage, specifically Jet A1, a ground-breaking development for the port, which has not had an operational aviation fuel storage for the past 20 years.

Dahabshiil Group and its partners has invested over US Dollars 100 million in the project.
