Garowe (PP News Desk) — Abdinur Sheikh Mohammed Ishaq, Spokesman for Puntland Transitional Electoral Commission (TPEC), today briefed the media on the progres to formalise Puntland political associations.
“Today is the deadline for political associations to submit documents to TPEC. Only twelve political associations have submitted documents out of 17 political associations that regretted with TPEC in the first phase. Three political associations have merged” Abdinur said. “The vetting process will begin tomorrow to determine which political organisations have fully met the criteria.”
Abdinur Sh. M. Ishaq: TPEC will start work on voter registration rules
TPEC has banned any conferences by political associations during the Covid-19 health emergency. “TPEC is working on voter registration rules” said Abdinur.
Puntland State will conduct pilot local government elections in several districts next year. Efforts to conduct local elections in Puntland strengthen the decentralisation process.
In 2013 similar efforts to establish political associations and conduct local elections bore no fruits. The incumbent President, Abdirahman Farole, was in the last year of his term in office.
Acccusations about inadequate consultations with stakeholders led to shelving of the democratisation process in the first autonomous administration in Somalia.
