A DISGRUNTLED SOLDIER GUNS DOWN 11 ETHIOPIAN SOLDIERS IN JIGJIGA
Jigjiga ( PP News ) — On Tuesday evening while Ethiopian soldiers in Jigjiga were in their barracks watching the news bulletin on the war in Tigray, a soldier grabbed a gun and killed eleven soldiers and wounded twenty soldiers. The soldier wounded himself in an attempt to take his life but he passed away at a hospital in Jigjiga.
The disgruntled soldier belonged to the Tigray region. He was one of the soldiers who were disarmed by the Ethiopian army. “When the news of the Tigray districts that have fallen were reported, soldiers cheered and clapped. That is when the soldier grabbed another unsuspecting soldier’s gun and began to shoot soldiers indiscriminately” said an Oromo officer.
The Ethiopian Army disarmed Tigrayan soldiers due to the war with TPLF.
Reports of revenge killings by Amhara soldiers in Jigjiga followed the incident. “Amhara officers killed at least eight Tigrayan soldiers . Twelve soldiers fled to the Liyu Police base in Jigjiga where they asked for protection against revenge killing by Amhara soldiers”.
The Ethiopian Government introduced policies to exclude Tigrayan soldiers from army operations for fear that they could share intelligence with Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front currently at war with the Ethiopian National Defence Forces in the northern parts of the country.
