Musaylima was a false prophet from the Banu Hanifah clan. His tribe were Christians. They lived in Diriyah in the Nejd and one day him and some members of his clan came to Medina. Musaylima stayed in the camp while the others met the prophet, they renounced Christianity and converted to Islam. The Prophet SAW gave them gifts and they told him that there was one other man left at their camp, Prophet Muhammed saw gave them gifts to hand to the last man even though he wasn’t a Muslim, that man was Musaylima. When they returned to camp, he was annoyed with Prophets gesture and words and wanted to claim prophethood for himself. After this visit the men went back to their tribe and they all, but Musaylima, converted to Islam. It’s believed that the Banu Hanifah renounced Islam, some straying and following Musaylima before Nabi Muhammed’s death, and others following him after Prophet Muhammed’s death.
This man was a magician and was able to wow ignorant people with his tricks. His future wife (Sajah) was one too, she also claimed prophethood. Musaylima would copy the Prophet and make up his own religious verses. He would get people to follow him by making alcohol and zina okay and telling them they didn’t need to pray. At this point he had manny followers and thought of himself as an equal to Prophet Muhammed saw. He sent a letter to Prophet Muhammed that said:
“From Musaylimah, the Messenger of Allah, to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. To proceed: I have become a partner with you in this matter (prophethood), so half the earth (should) belong to us (Banu Haneefah) and half to the Quraish. But Quraish are people who exceed their bounds.”
The Prophet told him off and Musaylima continued being a false prophet until he was killed during the Ridda Wars. He was killed by Wahshi RA, the sahaba who killed Hamza RA before he converted to Islam. It’s reported that Wahshi RA did so to make up for killing the best of man (Hamza), therefore killing the worst of man (Musaylima).
His wife, Sajah, converted to Islam and the Banu Hanifah became Muslims after Musaylimas death. It’s believed that Abu Bakr banned them from particpating in War because of their former apostasy but Umar overturned that. Some members of this tribe supported the early Khwarijs against the Ummayds. Some sources also say that the Abbasids and Ummayds were wary of this teibe and avoided giving them any power. This tribe wasn’t powerful and they continued to reside in their land, though they often lost land to their neighboring tribes.
Their only prominent descendants are the ibn Sauds that rule Saudi Arabia.
