here are the issues they’re having coming to an agreement i’ve been seeing.

for example Ethiopia has rejected all

mitigation measures for droughts and prolonged droughts and measures to address prolonged dry years

here is the main contentions:

An Egyptian government source speaking to Mada Masr on condition of anonymity at the time said that there are three terms on which Egypt would not “under any circumstances” compromise: an agreed minimum amount of water Ethiopia would have to release annually, legally-binding measures for mitigation and dispute resolution and a final document that does not imply any permanent concession from Egypt on its water rights. A consultant to the negotiations said that Ethiopia was also insisting on a water share — a term to which they said Egypt would never agree.

not only are they antagonising neighbours, they are giving the states institutions existential crises. But i would not be super worried about ethiopia cutting water off, it brings nothing but bluffing each other.

Theoretically, if Puntland and Somaliland were recognized as independent states tomorrow, we wouldn’t have to worry about the chaos in the south and could instead focus on our own development and opportunities.

The corrupt generals turned Egypt into a borderline banana state with no agency. Whatever Baba america or the uae says goes.

Egypt had multiple chances during Trump’s first term but they chickened out. Now the dam is a reality and destroying it would flood the homes and farms of tens of millions in Sudan and southern Egypt.

Ethiopia can and will build more dams for electricity. Egyptian elites did this to themselves.

Not our problem honestly but since the lunatic in Addis is openly threatening to annex parts of Somalia and Eritrea, I don’t see why the two(+ djbouti in the future) countries shouldn’t form a long term security pact with Cairo. Something like a mini-NATO.
