The Persecution of Ibn Taymiyyah and His Followers

The Persecution of Ibn Taymiyyah and His Followers

By Bassam Zawadi

The great student of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Abdul Hadi, says in his book, al-'Uqood al-Durriyah:

“When he [i.e., Ibn Taymiyyah] was imprisoned, his followers split apart, and his books were scattered. His followers were too frightened to display his books publicly. Each one went his own way. Some hid his books, while others ran away with them. Others sold them, while others destroyed them. Some had them stolen or abandoned them to the extent that they could not get hold of them again and salvage them. If it was not for the kindness of Allah and His support, no one would have been able to preserve these books.”

Two points to take out from this:

- Alhamdulillah that Allah has preserved the works of this great legend for us.

- Alhamdulillah for the freedoms we have today for practicing our beliefs compared to others.

Sacrificing Personal Interests for the Public Interest

By Bassam Zawadi

Ibn Taymiyyah said that if it were in the public interest that he goes to jail, then he would accept being imprisoned. ِThis is a great example of someone who prioritized communal and broader Islamic interests before his own. He did this because he was worried that the dispute at the highest levels of government pertaining to his fate might potentially cause strife.

As for most of us today, the required sacrifice is considerably less. Sometimes, brothers and sisters, all it takes is subduing our pride and ego just a little tiny bit for the sake of keeping the peace and love in the community. Let us not be selfish, and let us strive to prioritize the Ummah of Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) before our individual selves.
