in the 1500s iran became majority shia through mass conversions (with alot of blood spilled) by the safavid empire in practically a single generation. shiaism spread to eastern province of saudi bahrain iraq etc. that small time frame in iran has had reprecussions until today. otherwise shiaism would be a fringe sect. The Persians would be so much better off if they didn't intervene in Arab affairs.
the persian-gulf tensions would be strictly political instead of political and anti shia. and iran today might be the defacto leader of the muslim world (since they produce weapons have a strong army strong in scientific fields and education etc) and persian language would be more prominent.
