Tigrinya is a language, Tigrayan is an ethnicity, Tigray is a region in North Ethiopia and the language is spoken by the Tigrayan and the Jeberti (Tigray Muslims) people. Tigre is an entirely seperate Muslim ethnicity that lives in the lowland Eritrea and Eastern Sudan.
Tigrays is not the same as Amharans but share the same religion (Orthodox Christianity). They have their own feuds together like Croats and Serbs. They’re both neighbors who live in the Highland plateau between Northern Ethiopia and South Western Eritrea.
Eritrean Muslims have their own ethnicity, language and culture (there are 8 majority Muslim ethnicities) and are scattered in Eritrea, North Ethiopia, Eastern Sudan and Western Djibouti.
Eritrean Christians are the Tigrayans but uses the term Tigrinya to avoid confusion between them and Tigray since the split in the 20th century when Italy and England created the borders and instilled nationalism to divide these two.
The Tigrinya speaking Muslims who inhabit in both regions are the ethnic Jeberti. They’re almost identitical to the Tigrayans but they have their own term to segregate themselves from the Christians for several reason; avoid confusion, persecutions and because Tigray culture heavily associates with Christianity so they have their own Islamic one.
