I first saw a video on YouTube of an old Somali man resettling in Morocco from Europe. That video made it on here and the topic of Somali men going to Morocco for marriage was brought into focus.

Then more and more videos popped up on the internet, including this video where this Moroccan girl says her favourite city is Mogadishu. My friends started talking about it. My co workers and even my parents were talking about this trend.

Then yesterday, I caught up with this old Somali friend from high school and guess where he’s going this spring? Yep, Marrakech, Morocco. Why? To get married of course. He doesn’t have anything set up and plans to see what’s out there and just pick one. Apparently it’s that easy right now.

Further proof of this trend is that even Moroccan Canadians I know are aware of it. And they don’t seem annoyed or bothered by it. A mid thirties Moroccan guy casually brought up the topic with me and he was chill about it. According to him, reports of this trend are also spreading in their community.

So, what is really going on? What’s wrong with the Somali women that all the men are going over to Marrakech? And just as importantly, what’s wrong with the Somali men that they need to marry out so much? And finally, what’s up with Morocco’s girls? Why is it so easy to get them? Is it a cultural thing?

Me personally, I can see myself doing that, too. But I also can see what’s wrong with it. Should the government address it? Should Arab men be allowed to scoop up the xalimos as long as they take them with them to the Mideast?
