I put Books to the Test of Life
May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he!
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained!
He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame!
And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood!
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber!
-Surat 111
Here's the miraculous part: Abu Lahab and his wife both died idolators, enemies of the message...and they died years after the sura was revealed.
The polytheists possessed the equivalent of a nuclear weapon at the time: Abu Lahab's word. All he had to do was announce (even untruthfully) that he converted to Islam, and that would have been enough to demolish the Quran, the prophet and all of Islam. He could have said, "Muhammad claims the Quran is from God. The Quran claims me and my wife will die non-believers and go to hell. Well, today I announce that I have become a Muslim."
And yet that never happened. Neither Abu Lahab nor his wife did anything like this. Even a simple rumor produced by anyone at all would have sufficed in turning away many people from Islam, a rumor claiming Abu Lahab or his wife had embraced Islam, and therefore the Quran was false in its prophecy, for how can he go to hell when he had become a Muslim? And if Abu Lahab himself claimed it and stuck with it for months or even years, this could have easily and quickly crushed the message when people would see the prophecy is false. Then Abu Lahab could go back to his polytheism after destroying Islam.
After the revelation of that sura, Abu Lahab died 12 years later, an idolator, shortly after the battle of Badr. The idolators spared nothing in order to attack, discredit and bury Islam. They used torture, murder, lies, propaganda, everything. And yet there was their prime opportunity, their greatest chance to once and for all bury Islam, and they did nothing with it, for 12 years.
Praise Allah.
10:24: "...thus do We make clear the communications for a people who reflect."
