A fundraising drive by Melbourne woman Fardowsa Abdirahman helped raise funds to rescue an exploited Somali bride in Kenya from life in a brothel.

But now she is calling for more to be done to stamp out sex tourists preying on African women.

A year ago, Ms Abdirahman was instrumental in helping to raise funds to help rescue teenage refugee Jamil Abdi - who was forced to live in a brothel in Kenya after being duped into marriage by a tourist and then abandoned.

Ms Abdirahman is now appealing to authorities to crack down on the kind of so-called vacation marriages that entrapped Ms Abdi, saying they exploit the vulnerable and helpless.

"These guys come to exploit these girls and once they get what they want they leave them broke, pregnant, " she said.
"They are coming from all over. They are coming from America, they are coming from the United Kingdom, they are coming from Australia, from France, from Europe from everywhere."

Ms Abdirahman said she first heard about Ms Abdi's plight after it was highlighted on a piece by Britain's Channel 4.
"This place you've entered. No other Somali would come in here. but I am raising my daughter here. I live here. I have been given a bad name," she told reporters.

"They say 'look at that Somali girl. She works in a brothel. But this is how my daughter and I survive."

Ms Abdirahman discovered Ms Abdi’s plight via Facebook and said she was compelled to act.

"The story was heartbreaking. It was very touching, " she told SBS News.

"I was angry. Just to see a young girl in the situation she was in. It was very sad."

She set up a fundraising page, which quickly raised more than $15,000 in just three days – enough money to change Ms Abdi's life.

The grateful 17-year-old has since set up her own business and moved into her own apartment.
"Here my daughter can play outside with the other kids. It's clean. The other place wasn't even clean,” Ms Abdi said.

"I used to pray to God that I didn't have to raise her there and God has answered my prayers. Here I can watch TV. Sometimes watch movies. I can cook. Home cooked food is much better."

This is the girl & her story.

What happened to all these wealthy well known sheikhs and businessmen in Isley in Nairobi? Don't they help these kind of desperate Somalis? Couldn’t they help her?

A year ago, a 16-year-old Somali girl, Jamila Abdi, was hoodwinked into marriage by a tourist and brought to Nairobi, only to be abandoned penniless and with child.

Jamila was thus forced to take refuge at a brothel within the city from where she did what she had to in order to survive as well as fend for her young daughter.

The teenage refugee was castigated by the rest of the community who viewed her boarding situation a disgrace to the Islamic faith.

They said, look at that Somali girl. She works in a brothel. But this is how my daughter and I survived," she disclosed.

However, as fate would have it, Britain's Channel 4 got wind of her predicament and decided to interview Jamila and share her story.

The tearful young and bewildered mother poured her heart out and remained adamant that despite her predicament, she would do whatever it took to ensure her survival.

"This place you've entered. No other Somali would come in here. but I am raising my daughter here. I live here. I have been given a bad name," she remarked.

Her story soon spread across the globe through Facebook and eventually landed at the hands of Fardowsa Abdirahman, who turned out to be the woman that would change Jamila's life forever.

On her part, Fardowsa stated that the story of the teenage mother stuck at brothel touched her to the core, prompting her to set up a fundraising page, which quickly raised more than Ksh1.5 million in just three days.

She then used the money to help Jamila move out of the brothel and into her own private apartment in Kenya's Eastleigh estate, as well as set her up with her own business.

"I used to pray to God that I didn't have to raise her there and God has answered my prayers. Here I can watch TV. Sometimes watch movies. I can cook. Home cooked food is much better," a visibly excited Jamila revealed to SBSNews.

Fardowsa has since started a movement to help out young girls such as Jamila who get duped into sex slavery under the guise of marriage.

Here's the video of Jamila's compelling story:

Glad she had help. This is a big problem. But how do we solve this? Human explotation has always existed and when the gap between the haves are and have not is so big. You will see some people exploit poor people. I still dont get how that guy abandon his child

@Jaydaan

Most of these guys are married men who have wives and children in the diaspora and they exploit poor girls the same age as their daughters and disappear, they need to be named and shamed and forced to pay child welfare to these mothers that others will never be tempted to do the same and be forced to go to Bangkok and seek prostitutes there.

Naming and shaming them will work on Somalis. On the international Child support regime, I don't know about Kenya and Somalia, but the United States and Australia are member states of the Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance. How it works, I have no clue.

Child Support Section
The Hague Convention of 23 November 2007 on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance and the Hague Protocol of 23 November 2007 on the Law Applicable to Maintenance Obligations seek to establish a modern, efficient and accessible international system for the cross-border recovery of child support and other forms of family maintenance. This specialised section contains a range of information on the Convention and the Protocol, including their full texts, current status, explanatory documents and other materials which will assist those working with these instruments.

Naming wont work. The man will just say we are divorced, but im supporting my child. Strangers cant force him to do anything nor do they want to get involved in this. Everyday men abandon their kids.

@Jaydaan

Their wives in the diaspora don't know about these poor girls their husbands abused them and they will be labelled 'sex tourists'. Believe me many men would've second thoughts messing with these girls. The problem is, their clans will defend these evil men. It is happening to Somalis in Addis Ababa too.

Ive saw a clip of extremely poor Iraqi families where the women lost their husbands and still wont resort to prostitution.

She is disgusting individual with no self respect.

It is very easy to judge them from the comforts of our loungerooms. Put yourself in their shoe, no one wants to help you and you and your child are starving?
It is a difficult situation, but compare that to what others endure which is far worse. Losing limbs, torture and other horrific things that people go through.

Some men make the excuse that they must sell drugs to make living and that logic is the same as a woman selling herself.

Also, most women if divorced, are helped by her family but she clearly is not recieving any help from them and probably cut ties to marry this guy which has lead her to where she is today.

Finally, you can not integrate prostitutes as they are broken people with no moral compass such as drug users and murderers
