The ICU did attempt negotiating with the TFG on numerous occasions but they refused. The ICU even took some orders from Abdullahi Yusuf during the first month of their administration. Abdullahi Yusuf falsely framed the ICU as a terrorist organization. Even Ethiopia was fed up with Abdullahi Yusuf and withdrew political and military support from him. That's why they abandoned him and began supporting the ICU leadership in the end.

Abdullahi Yusuf was branded an obstacle to peace and regional governments imposed sanctions on him. If ICU was a terrorist organization, why did the international community support them to lead the TFG in 2009?

There is not a single shred of tangible evidence to suggest the ICU was a terrorist organization. That is something Abdullahi Yusuf falsely propagated to get more political and military support from the international community in order to crush the ICU, which had massive public support and was a threat to his power.

The ICU was essentially the Somali decentralized version of the Taliban. It was the culmination of the 1990s/2000s turn towards local religious courts for self-governance, which was common in Muslim countries that encountered state failure. It was largely homegrown though. If you read up on Afghanistan, you'll see the parallels, it's quite striking.

There was no way the US would let an Islamist government win the Somali civil war after 9/11. If it had happened in the 90s the ICU probably would have created a Somali version of Iran or Sudan under Omar Al Bashir. Not pleasant to live in (morality police everywhere) but probably not as dysfunctional as today. There was a good risk of it eventually splintering though, so who knows.

Stop relying on propaganda. Propaganda doesn't constitute a legitimate or reliable source. Firstly, you are displaying a strong emotional subjective reaction to my post. You support Abdullahi Yusuf because he hails from the same clan as you and your hatred towards hawiye. ICU never claimed they would conquer the world or al qadea is their brothers. You are full of shit. ICU on numerous occasions said they have no affiliation with al qadea and even the United States government concluded that the majority of the ICU leadership were not extremist.

Majeerteen and Abdullahi Yusuf didn't teach any lessons to the ICU leadership. As a matter of fact, numerous Majeerteen troops were slaughtered in Xamar and they had to beg Ethiopia for military assistance. Majeerteen troops were trembling in fear when they entered certain neighborhoods in Xamar. There is a whole article written about your brave men lol. When Ethiopia saw how useless and corrupt Abdullahi Yusuf and his administration were, they withdrew political and military support from him. Ethiopia then decided to support ICU and Abdullahi Yusuf ran as a qaxooti to Yemen.

The rise of Al shaaab was a response to the invasion and human rights violations committed by the TFG and Ethiopian troops in Xamar. Abdullahi Yusuf and the Ethiopian invasion of Xamar gave rise to Al Shabaab, not Hawiye or Sheikh Sharif. At the end of the day you guys didn't accomplish anything. Abdullahi Yusuf was sanctioned and condemned by the international community, which forced him to resign. The ICU leadership ended up ruling Somalia again. Abdullahi Yusuf ran as a qaxooti to Yemen.
