The Juba river runs to the ocean throughout the whole year, it’s the only permanent river in Somalia. It never dries out, and it begins nearly on the Gedo border. Somalia’s most important region. Marehan are sitting on the best land in the entire Somalia, and it’s all theirs.

It’s not possible to dam Juba river for agricultural purposes in Ethiopia, as the land around it is extremely mountainous until it reaches Somalia’s border. So there is nothing Ethiopia can do that will negatively affect the Juba river water flow in Somalia.

On the other hand, the Shabelle river is the one which is pretty much becoming a seasonal river. It’s being used for large scale agricultural purposes by the Ogaden who are settling down in masse to farm in Galbeed. In the future the Shabelle river will not even flow into Middle/Lower Shabelle during the dry season.
