The EU to promote strategic corridors in Africa

The European Union has selected eleven transport corridors in Africa to support the construction or expansion of these.

The European Union (EU) wants to promote eleven transport corridors in Africa. To this end, it supports the construction or expansion of infrastructure on selected routes. This applies to roads, railways and tracks, airports, waterways and seaports. The traffic arteries run right through the continent. They primarily - but not exclusively - connect landlocked countries with ports on the coast. The funding is part of Global Gateway, the European Union’s infrastructure initiative.

The corridors are intended to facilitate mobility and trade

The EU promotes mobility and trade via the Strategic Corridors, both within Africa and between Europe and Africa. Value chains are to be strengthened and jobs created along the corridors. The EU wants to create clean and efficient corridors so that more mobility does not mean more CO 2 emissions. The infrastructure should also be climate-resilient.

In contrast to previous projects, the EU now wants to “go big,” said Paolo Ciccarelli, Head of the Department for Sustainable Transport and Urban Development in the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) when presenting the initiative. Previously, the EU had funded individual infrastructure projects and achieved hardly any visible results. Now she wants to concentrate on a few corridors and develop them holistically: with roads, rails and waterways and in a second phase with improved public services and urban mobility.

On the one hand, business opportunities arise when African states tender services for the planning, construction and monitoring of infrastructure. On the other hand, they can also be involved in projects that are intended to further develop the catchment areas of the corridors in general.

The initiative is part of Global Gateway

The Strategic Corridors are an important part of the EU 's Africa-Europe Global Gateway investment package. The initiative is funded by the EU's Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI), also known as Global Europe.

Global Gateway is the EU’s answer to China’s new Silk Road. In addition, the Middle Kingdom is building infrastructure almost worldwide, much of it in Africa. The criticism of this: Projects are often not sustainable and the orders go almost exclusively to Chinese companies. In contrast to this, Global Gateway is intended to consciously promote sustainable infrastructure - both in terms of environmental protection and financing. In addition, the companies should compete fairly, so that European companies also have opportunities.

Investments in Africa’s infrastructure are urgently needed to improve the living conditions of the population and make the continent more competitive. Analysts assume that more than 100 billion US dollars per year would have to be invested in additional infrastructure in Africa.

Ayy I need to buy land in awdal, my hometown is going to be popping, but the south needs to get on that Silk Road with China can’t have somaliland getting all the shine

A bit more context: This is part of a €300B initiative by the EU Commission.
Even if the Somaliland portion of this initiative was allotted 0.01% of that budget, that would equate to €300 million.
Somaliland could do amazing things with that sort of money.

Last year the Brits through CDC now called BII partnered with DP World to "chart a stronger course for African trade around the world". This partnership will help address the stark imbalance in global trade through supporting the modernisation and expansion of ports and inland logistics across Africa, starting in the ports of Dakar (Senegal), Sokhna (Egypt) and Berbera (Somaliland). The platform covers a long-term investment period. DP World is contributing its stakes in the three existing ports initially and expects to invest a further $1 billion through the platform over the next several years. CDC is committing approximately $320 million initially and expects to invest up to a further $400 million over the next several years.

The corridor steers clear from Somalia and most of Somaliweyn lol. Go get that bag Somaliland :mjlol:
K5 eating good as well and Jabuuti ofcourse perhaps Sijui Somalis as well.Somalis will be eating good inshallah. We hope our brothers to the South find Stability and join the rest of the continent in competing in economic development

Out of 55 corridors initially identified through an iterative step-wise delineation approach, a restricted set of 11 corridors has been determined using a combination of machine-based approach and policy-prioritisation process: therefore, a second body of research strives to investigate on how selected corridors can be functional to the development of the mining sector and in turn beneficial to the regional economy at a broader sector scale. Mineral resources were, in fact, embodied in 1 out of the 32 prioritised indicators, so not necessarily the final Strategic Corridors are also mineral resource corridors .

Because the EU is choosing the existing infrastructure, they don't want to build anything, and that is fair. that can explain the phobia of most of Somalia, but the situation in the south have changed.

I doubt that is the reason that Somalia is not included in the list.

The future of Africa will likely be characterized by a rolling frontier of manufacturing and other high-labor enterprises, quite possibly including large agricultural and natural resource projects. This is an attractive option for current rich countries.

The process will likely look similar to what occurred in Mexico, where a very poor, almost entirely agrarian nation gradually developed into a hub of industry and commercial agriculture which now supplies much of America’s vegetables and assembles highly complex computerized cars and trucks. Both U.S. and Mexican companies carried out the process with state backing.

I think the EU's global gateway is just the start, trillions will poured into Africa over the next 20 years as Africa becomes too big to ignore

Nice fantasy Africa is plagued by way too much instability and corruption for that to ever happen. Believe me they'll happily ignore Africa for the forseeable future, they dont even consider Africans human. At most they'll bribe corrupt governments officials and warlords with pennies to continue and expand strip mining operations and deforestation.

Notice how the map focuses on connecting resource rich central Africa with ports....i wonder why 😂🤣

The Chinese has really developed Ethiopia. The amount of highways, railroads, factories, and dams that China built is amazing. It is doubtful EU and US would be able to compete that.

And here is the reason: 90% of the resources allocated to Western aid doesn't leave the West. Each congressman/woman or parliamentarian wants some of that money reaches his (or her) constituency. So out of the 300BUSD funds allocated for this project, roughly $30B will only be visible in Africa.

Keep in mind, with the current ongoing war in Ukraine and high prices of oil and gas, it iss doubtful the EU will be able to commit this huge money into Africa. Germany, the largest economy in the EU, seems to be in trouble in the next months unless miracles happen that they will find new source of energy that is not Russia.

The African Development Corridors Database

The large-scale expansion of built infrastructure is profoundly reshaping the geographies of Africa, generating lock-in patterns of development for future generations. Understanding the impact of these massive investments can allow development opportunities to be maximised and therefore be critical for attaining the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and African Union’s Agenda 2063 aims. However, until now information on the types, scope, and timing of investments, their evolution and spatial-temporal impact was dispersed amongst various agencies. We developed a database of 79 development corridors across Africa, synthesizing data from multiple sources covering 184 projects on railways, wet and dry ports, pipelines, airports, techno-cities, and industrial parks. The georeferenced interlinked tabular and spatial database includes 22 attributes. We expect this database will improve coordination, efficiency, monitoring, oversight, strategic planning, transparency, and risk assessments, among other uses for investment banks, governments, impact assessment practitioners, communities, conservationists, economists, and regional economic bodies.
