The book not only mentions the Somali names but also their names in Galla language (oromo)

The Somali obession with the Urur(Plaedis) translating to gather, congregate or organisation isn't by chance and can be observed around the world.

1. Greek Mythology

  • Name: The Pleiades (Πλειάδες)
  • Story: Seven daughters of the titan Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione. Pursued by Orion, they were transformed into stars by Zeus.
  • Notable: Only six stars are usually visible to the naked eye; Greeks explained this by saying one sister (Merope) hid her face out of shame for marrying a mortal.

2. Indigenous Australian Cultures

  • Story: Many Aboriginal groups see the Pleiades as a group of sisters being pursued by Orion (often a male hunter or man). This mirrors the Greek version despite having no historical contact.
  • Example: The Yolngu people call them the "Seven Sisters" and link them to sacred Dreaming stories.

3. Native American Tribes

  • Lakota/Dakota: See them as a group of young women.
  • Navajo: Associated with the creation myth; part of the constellations used for agriculture and ceremonial timing.
  • Cherokee: Related them to a tale of boys who became stars after dancing into the sky.

4. Japanese Culture

  • Name: Subaru (すばる)
  • Meaning: "To unite" or "gather together."
  • Modern Usage: The car manufacturer Subaru uses six stars in its logo to represent the cluster.

5. Māori (New Zealand)

  • Name: Matariki
  • Significance: Marks the Māori New Year; a time of reflection, planning, and celebration.
  • Tradition: Visibility in June/July signals the start of the new year.

6. Ancient Egypt

  • Connection: Linked with agricultural cycles, particularly the flooding of the Nile.
  • Deity Association: Sometimes associated with the Seven Hathors, goddesses who appear in star form.

7. Hindu Tradition

  • Name: Krittika
  • Role: The Pleiades are considered the six mothers of the war god Kartikeya (Skanda).
  • Calendar: One of the lunar mansions (nakshatras) in Vedic astrology.

8. Aztec and Maya

  • Role: Tied to calendar cycles and celestial alignments.
  • Beliefs: The Pleiades' zenith passage (directly overhead) was a key moment in ritual calendars, marking significant ceremonial times.

I found the concept of nuuro to be the most fascinating part of the book. It sounds like he's describing some type of life force energy.

Wisdom is the ability to make sound decisions based on knowledge and experience, since we lack both, it is vital to learn from our elders. Many of the shrubs and trees have healing properties.

I wonder if this epidemic was what led to the complete abandonment of the towns. It's crazy I've never heard anybody mention this before.
