From the wars that Al-Shabaab is waging inside Somalia, the Somali-Kenyan border, and the Ethiopia-Somalia border, I doubt these mere defections will hamper their growth. Not sure where the additional support is coming from, but it seems their numbers and strength are growing. Just look at this attack on Kenyan forces. The way they structured their IEDs, the way they were coordinating, the distance of their hideouts to the area where they buried the IEDs, and their command-and-control of those attacks clearly point to a highly motivated and highly structured rebel force.
Not sure why the Kenyan govt didn't invest in radio jamming on their equipment. There is no excuse for this. A country like Kenya should've been able to afford this.
