Take a look at all the Somali names at the university of Minnesota graduation class this year.

We do 😩. Believe me majority of us have degrees , esp in the medical teaching and engineering fields. The gang bangers a lot of spotlight & overshadow all the good
Yeah even here in Canada we have a lot of Somalis in the medical and engineering fields. I've seen a lot more Somalis going to university at UofA, UTM, UTSGC, Uoft, TMU, York, etc. And when you go on Linkedin I see a lot of educated Somalis on my page both men and women mashallah.

What’s the culture like around ivy leagues over there? Can you not go to an Ivy League for free through the whole way based on merit?

Obvs UK is much smaller with much fewer universities but there’s many people who go from council house to oxbridge you can get sponsored
It depends on what you want to do and also grad school. I don’t think Ivy League matters much if you want to be say a doctor or accountant. Tons of Somali doctors in Minnesota , I know of whole families where all the kids are doctors, 4-5 kids. I think if you want to go to grad school Ivy League might matter more then. Going to Harvard as an undergrad and going to Harvard Business School are two very different things for example. Somalis just need a shit ton of college/university graduates to get average income way up.

Why is this the case?

They are pretty standardized fields in the states(and probably elsewhere) and you also have to take entrance exams that are all the same for both medicine and accounting. Long as you can do well on those and get the grades you’ll be fine. Ivy league is incredibly competitive and expensive. It wouldn’t make any difference if you went to Harvard medical school or Minnesota. I know plenty of Somali doctors that make 250-300k in their first year or two who didn’t go to an Ivy League school.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t try to go, just that for certain fields it isn’t necessary from what I have seen. Ivy League probably makes sense if you want to end up being a CEO or executive of a Fortune 500 company or something. Even then, you need a masters in business from an Ivy League, not just undergrad. It’s probably mostly for the connections with alumni. Usually those guys are mostly engineers too. Kinda biased but they seem to self-select for people they think are really smart and good at math even though it’s probably not necessary for an executive.

Meanwhile r/somalia are saying Minnesota Somalis are cursed and good for nothing

It's because they are the single largest and most active diaspora in the western world, so every little thing that happens gets put under a microscope and quantify that by the raging republicans as well.

There is 99% more good than bad happening, they are graduating university in higher numbers, they start businesses in high numbers, they host the largest professional network, they are by far the largest diaspora investors to the greater Somali regions and they have the biggest political clout and influence in the western diaspora.

They should continue marching forward and ignore the noise because they are doing big things.

America really is the land of opportunity. They literally get free university in Minnesota and countless grants, good for them to utilize it and not let it go to waste.

In Canada you’re paying $50k+ for a STEM degree only to be paid like shit and compete against a million Indian and Chinese nationals for an engineering job.

London diaspora is larger then Minnesota over 100k+ Somalis live in London compared to 80k in Minnesota but I agree with everything else

A lot of non-American Somalis(especially the Europoor malis) stay on our case.
If one of us fart they will hold 20 Spaces/lives talking about it “Did you hear so-and-so farted? Wallaih They’re farting all over America and destroying America bro.”

Only way I can describe it is jealousy. Cause we don’t even be thinking about them. Let them keep seething.

80k were born in Somalia.
If you include their kids, it’s around 130k-140k

Minneapolis Somalis lucked out in a number of ways. They’re in a more open labor market that’s pro-business, yet also shaped by socially democratic policies and an inclusive local political system that allows them to be active participants. Add to that a flexible educational system that adapts to their needs , even allowing for tailor-made programs and you’ve got a powerful environment for upward mobility.

I couldn't agree more . it’s great they’re taking advantage of it.

The way I see it, the American Somali diaspora has the potential to serve as both an investment vehicle and a voice for advocacy , for Somalia and for Somalis globally.

They’re situated in the financial and political center of the world.
Just like the Indian, Chinese, and Israeli/Jewish diasporas, they can leverage their position to make an outsized impact.
