Yeah, it's mainly them and older generation of Somalis that carries traditional Somali names. As we've gotten more religious, especially since the turn of century, it's become more common with Islamic names.

Some even name their children regular Arabic names and assume that it's by default tied to Islam just because it's in Arabic. No wonder why people want a Somali cultural revolution

Some Somalis have been practising subclan surnames for a long time. Some names that come to mind

Sh xasan barsane - his fullname was xasan nuur axmed but barsane was his subclan of gaaljecel

Maxamed qanyare - his real name was maxamed dahir afrax, reer qanyare is his subclan of hilibi maxamed

Xaji cali majerteen - his fullname was abdirahman cali fiqikheyr but kept his clan name

Most sufis also did the same, naming after subclans, clans or even towns, sheekh cabdiraxman celi of the celi abgaal tribe, sheekh yuusuf direed of the dir tribe, sheekh uweys biyooley from biyooley town in bakool, sheekh qudubi from the awqudub sheekhal clan etc.
