Structure of the ICU

ICU was never one cohesive unit. It was just an umbrella of old Islamists, Hawiye militia, new school ikhwan type wadaads like sheikhs Shariff and large numbers of young salafi jihadis who were decisive in some of t the key battles. People exaggerate their governance potential.
They only governed Xamar for 6 months and were derailed by the invasion before they were able to transition into being a real government.

How would that government have looked like? They had fundamental differences about Takfir and governance which would have eventually meant eventual splits or infighting. The occupation only exposed the existing divisions between nationalists, tribalists, and different Islamist groups who were only united in fighting warlords.

I don't think there were that much deep divisions on how the organization should be ran. Of the 13 courts that made up the ICU, only two of them had any hardliner beliefs. All the moderates splittered off after 2006 leaving Al-Shabab left to fill up the vacuum.

As this thread highlighted, they were remarkably centralized and shared a common goal in rehabilitating Somalia even after the warlords were defeated. If they were given at least a year they would have easily stablized and ruled most if not all of Somalia thanks to their efficient governance and widespread appeal among Somalis.

Was Cabdulaahi Yusuf the legally elected president of Somalia or not? If he was, which everyone who is sane agrees he was, the ICU should have submitted to him and invited him to rule from Villa Somalia. By refusing to submit to the legally chosen president, they chose to become khwaarij, no different from Alshabab.

Puntland had been a safe haven for 15 years at that point and had a stable government. The ICU declared its intent to invade Puntland. In response, A/Y and Puntland choose to do everything possible to destroy the ICU.
Legal beacuse a bunch of warlord sabotaged the Abdiqasim government and met in Nairobi?

My uncles who experienced the civil war used to tell me those 6 months were the most peacefull 6 months ever. It was known as “6da bilood o nabada ah”.

Legal because that is where the federal structure of Somalia was adopted. A/Y's legal status as president is not in dispute.

The question is why did the ICU refuse to allow him to move the TFG from Baydhabo to Villa Somalia after the warlords had been cleared out?

“Getting elected by 79 Ethiopian stooges in Nairobi is legally elected?? The Enbagathi conference itself was in its a totality orchestrated by Ethiopians. Puntland also broke off ties with a “Legally” elected president in HSM just recently so stop acting like you care about giving deference to the internationally recognized gov.”

A/Y was legally elected by Somali consensus. Anyone arguing against that is arguing in bad faith.

Cutting off cooperation with HSM does not meaning that Puntland does not recognize HSM as the legitimate leader of Somalia.

The ICU rebelled against the legitimate gov and that gov used its prerogative to destroy the ICU via its allies.

The ICU was not all moderate. It had many courts that were Taliban level bad.

taliban would be an improvement (apart from the womens thing). taliban arent salafi-wahhabis. they even have tombs and the salafi-wahhabis couldnt even destroy them in the 80s and 90s (under the mujahidin) even though they wanted to. taliban are anti salafi-wahhabi. they know not to import dangerous ideologies of takfirism.

The TFG was an Ethiopian project it should not be recognised and opposing them was a national duty and thanks to the Ethiopian imposed government the TFG has been a corrupt failed system ever since.

TFG build in kenya not Ethiopian.
The Mbagathi conference in Kenya was controlled by Ethiopia only actors it approved where allowed as opposed to the Arta conference which had more than more than 3,000 civil society members much more inclusive and representive of the Somali populace.

Its ironic the ones arguing for the legality of the TFG are the ones who where the Ethiopian agents who took down the legally recognised TNG government.
