I concede this word is older than I thought.
Do you concede that the historic and current demonym of Somalia is "Somali"?
No.
You may have been justified in using "Somali" pre civil war, this is because the name of the union state was:
- "
Somali" Republic - Jamhuuriyadda "
Soomaaliyeed" (1960-1969)
And
- "
Somali" Democratic Republic - Jamhuuriyadda Dimuqraadiga "
Soomaaliyeed"
In both instances, use of "Somali" would be justified due to the official name of the state explicitly employing such verbiage.
Even in Somali, the all encompassing term "
Soomaaliyeed" is used, the Somali language equivalent to "Somali".
During that period, use of "Somali" would have been justified.
This changes when Somaliland declared its independence, and what remained of the Somali Republic changed names to:
Federal Government of "
Somalia" - Dowladda Federaalka "
Soomaaliya".
Neither "Somali" nor "Soomaaliyeed" used, instead, you've reverted to the colonial "Somalia" verbiage.
From that point onwards, citizens of that administration automatically became "Somalians".
