Starting a business in the UK

If you had enough funds, and you wanted to start your own business in the UK, particularly London?

what would you do?

Here’s some ideas

a modern somali restaurant with a twist. Very stylish decor and unique. This might be tough considering the rising food prices and sky high prices of utility bills.

care agency/care home with a ageing population in the UK. This looks like a recession proof business. Might be difficult in terms staffing as a lot of people don’t want to do this kind of work.

fast food/burger joint restaurant could make killing with this type of concept as a lot of londoners eat out a lot and takeouts is a big part of the culture. Although its hard to run and very labor intensive.

Tuition Centre; hire young A Level students to teach little ones in afternoon and weekends.

Indoor play area: seasonal but can be profitable if marketed right. Add a coffee shop and food birthday parties etc could work.

anybody got any other ideas.

As Somalis we really need to venture out into different kind of businesses like the Asians, let’s share ideas.

I would love for Somalis to buy halls and not rent from Asians &Turks. This way we can host weddings and circulate money in our community.

that would be awesome but we need very rich Somalis for that! those type of Venues are in the 10 million range.

Tuition center. Somalis use Somali owned tuitions exclusively from my own experience btw

Yes I know one in southall that’s somali owned and it’s very popular and the owner is milking it.

How would you get the word out for something like that though, specially if your not in somali circles.

Do you think people would send their kids to the center if they know the owner in their eyes more credibility or would you say it’s earned through providing a good service.

I know some that own tuition and care agencies, I even know a guy who owns both. He makes bank, and all his employees are Somali.

Restaurants are not generally profitable but Somali ones are. Even Somali cafés make money but often shut down because they attract the wrong crowd.

I'll add recruitment agency, there's a large unemployed Somali population that need help finding work.

Yes to a recruitment agency!
Somalis also have own care agencies.
Unfortunately some people complain about clanism and prefer to work for other Africans/Caribbean.

?
Somali care home similar to what asians have they pick them up in the mornings to socialise with fellow ayeeyos/awowos and bring them back in the evenings. Demand for this will escelate soon due to the aging second gen somalis and 1st gen ones. Good money to be made from this honestly.

How can clanism be a problem in that environment, is their pay cut?

Don’t you think care homes have a negative stereotype in our culture, so a lot of people will not take their parents even to a day Centre. It’s a taboo subject take your parents there and your immediately caasi waleed.

Somalis don’t really consider that some people might not have kids to look after them, or they live abroad. That’s when these type of places are crucial. I already know many aunties in their late sixties with no children. Where will they go? to a gaalo care home of course .
