Somalisation (Names)

How many of you Somalis on here support the ban on foreign culture and names. I believe a law should be created in outlawing foreign and Arabic names. Arabic names have nothing to do with islam for you Ana Arab begs on here.

I am totally against this. I like the Arab names and believe the Arab and Somali names can coexist.

Yes I personally do like the names with Somali origin eg. guleed, Libaan, and Maay names like Isgowe, Keerow and Biikoole. It is part of our culture and heritage and Islam allows it and permits these names as long as they don't have polytheist origins. We shouldnt abandon these names and keep them.

But equally Arabic names especially those with Islamic origins like the names of the prophet's and sahaabah names are also weighed highly and good honourable names. Both can coexist without banning either.

Fair enough, but why do the majority of African ethnic groups like Tigray,Amhara,Shona,Igbo,Yoruba,Dinka,Luo whether muslim or Christian bear there ethnic names

We have ethnic names too, just because we have a variety of middle eastern names doesn’t mean we don’t have somali ones too. Europe’s most popular names have no origins in Europe but in Christianity which hailed from the Middle East.

I have no problem with Islamic names but we need to ban the shortening of names like Abdirahman, Abdisalam etc.Many Somalis carry the last name Abdi and it’s mostly the older generation who have no understanding of the Arabic language. Abdi itself means my slave.

Abdi is ok actually. As long as the parents do a niyaat intention that it means slave to Allaah swt

We need to re-educate our people. We need to encourage more Somali names but the names of Allah, the Sahaba or prophet Muhammad should be fine. A Somali family should have a mixture of both. Too much Abdis is becoming repetitive in our communities.
