I've seen a lot of somalis with what looks like a iron rod pressed into their skin leaving a scar like a X, and also cuts on their body.

Whats this practice about? And do you have it ?

I think it might be when their hoyos used to burn them for sickness, my dad has one.

For when you get sick, it's cultural medicine looooooooool you pay a visit to the local witch doctors looooooooooool
So that's where the burning part comes in? My father told me his hooyo burned him to cure the sickness/wherever the xaanoon was.

I have a huge mark shaped as tree on my stomach , although it is fading now but I asked my mom why I have it and she told I had Cagaarshow(Yellow skin/Jaundice) as a kid and those burns saved me.

I remember taking a physical test and the doctor asked me what these marks were about and whether I was abused, I told him it cultural thing and I was lucky I was from Somalia unlike South Sudanese ppl who burn their kids in the forhead and face.:mjdontkno:

Currently in Somalia, the use of western medicine for hepatitis is limited to multivitamins. Many still use fire burning and go to a traditional healer. It is also believed that early treatment improves the chances for cure and prevention from severe disease.

Oh interesting you were born in Somalia? When did you come to the west? And did that cure your hepatitis?

I was completely burnt as a child all over my back my stomach apparently i had some debilitating sickness as an infant. It only bothers me when others notice if i take my shirt off.

I was only 3 years old when I was cured with the burn, came to the west when I was 14 and never had the issue again, shit works and from what I heard this whole burning culture came from ancient Egyptians.

Are the scars obvious?

Some scares never fade specially the once they do in the face, two burns on your moustache and two in your chin is very common one in Somalia too, check out this Abdikahim BR 1:30.
