Somali's will never be respected until Somalia is respectable

I've been thinking today why the hell am I so emotionally invested in this sh*thole of a country? Hearing news about this country on here and on my twitter feed literally just dampens my mood.

I am never going to live there. Ever. Somalia won't even be a place fit to visit for vacation for at least another 15-20 years (minimum) let alone live.

I think it just has to do with dignity. When you tell people you are Somali they know your country is a sh*thole and they judge you for it. The other day I was at the airport & was chopping it up with a Zambian guy and when I told him I was originally from Somalia he literally winced and exclaimed "oh that place is a disaster, glad you made it out". I don't blame him, I'm glad I got out too.

I just want to be able to say I'm from Somalia and get some basic respect.

I'm going to unfollow all things related Somalia from my twitter & take a long vacation from sspot. I know I could just limit myself to general sub but l just can't help myself.

I want to leave you all with part of a speech from brother Malcolm that touches on the same themes. It doesn't matter if you were born in the west & are 5th generation diaspora, the stigma still applies to you.

Respect is earned when you have confidence. If you are embarrassed that your Somali, people can smell that shit off you. If people see you are proud of who you are and you walk around with balls and proud of your identity and everything about yourself, they are less likely to take the piss out of you in life. It’s a known fact. Now I agree 100 percent that Somalia needs to gain back its respect and needs to become stronger and become peaceful and fully functional. What I don’t agree with is you being embarrassed with your own identity and being a grown ass man who talks down on his own country because another man called it a ‘disaster’. It’s one thing to criticise your country because you want better for it. It’s another to completely talk shit about it due to self hate.

I suggest maybe curating your social media content and even on here. Choose to see what you want to see and ignore the negative. The ignore button is a great tool.

100 or so years ago, Somalis were giving charity to Arabs and now Somalis receive charity. All nations have their time in the sun.

Even Western developed nations can arguably be described as shitholes as they are plagued with issues such as being overworked, underpaid, broken families, homeless people on the streets, corrupt leaders snorting cocaine. But people ignore all these social ills because they can buy shiny new things on credit and can numb themselves with Netflix.

Use this temporary Somali shame to fuel your dreams for Somalia. You'll feel much better when you see the difference you personally made back home, even it it is one tree you planted which turns into someone's shade years later.

@IPushFatKids with that being said I am not gonna lie and say Somalia reputation as a country isnt hurting me myself. Inshallah I want to see the day where Somalia is peaceful, economically thriving and due to the long coastline we have, we take advantage of that and we become a tourism hotspot.inshallah Ppl will come to places like jowhar for farmland and some greenery tourism. And got to places like @Pwyneth Galtrow and @FBIsomalia homeland for old sultanate sites and historical ruins if they are into some archeology vacation and want to learn more about their ancestors ( like myself for example). Inshallah Somalia will be on par with places like Maldives and Seychelles in terms of tourism inshallah 🙏🏾

Aameen!

I think we need to have a topic on here for Somali positive news and pictures / videos to balance out the negative news and topics.

There are so many fun and positive young vloggers in Somalia who travel all over and they are filled with optimism and energy. We need to inject that spirit into the forum so we don't lose people like @IPushFatKids

i remember watching a somaliland guy on YouTube who came down to xamar and vlogged himself praying at the solidarity mosque. Went through his page and also watched him vlogging in baadiyo and showing many different parts and cities of the motherland. This needs to be shown to our brother @IPushFatKids to make him not feel bad about his mother land

It depends on the environment , of course if you are dealing with any good stuff let's say business . It's better for you to claim something else. I usually take this as an opportunity to advertise Somaliland and acknowledge that Somalis also own half of Ethiopia and kenya plus Djibouti.

But there also many other times that you really feel respected by mentioning the name Somalia. If you are dealing with tough peaple, let them know you are a Somalian and they Will definitely think twice before they fk with you. Somalia is notorious , it's every gangsters Dreamland.

I always tell people I'm Somali and never shy away from it. I agree with what you said here, I don't feel embarrassed about being Somali exactly but more so about the state of the country. I know sounds a bit contradictory.

How will things get better when the men ruling somalia do not fear god? who will they fear if they don't fear harming the environment (causing famines) and harming their own race (tribal conflict and siding with ajnabis)?

Somalia will never get better until the youth take the country by the yolk and swear to build and inclusive and respectable society that balances religion and state affairs in a just and righteous manner.

We must all agree on the direction we take our country in. We must all agree to end conflict and respect each other as equals. Finally we must love for one another what we love for ourselves. Until this is achieved the curse will never be lifted. Sometimes i'm ashamed that muslim nations claim to have moral values while we live like savages.

The cycle must be broken!

1400 yrs ago our current predicament was predicted.

Look at karballa when it all went down hill. Family against family for wealth and riches. Even the prophets family were targeted and driven into exile.

I honestly think you should look at the Ahadith about end times. @Yahya here has provided a great starting point.

These Ahadith contain clear and undeniable predictions about the world that we are living in today. They also provide the reasons why it becomes this way e.g. the Hadith above. That kind of knowledge takes away the anxiety and disappointment. It gives the reader comfort and the ease to live that stoic life recommended above.

Brother I honestly have zero respect for Africans. African countries in general are hostile to Somalis from my experience even though Somali Republic helped many African countries gain independence.

You can see it from their demeanor. Plus Somalia is not Mogadishu only. There are few regions doing much better than other African and Middle Eastern countries.

Unfortunately, therefore lack of any wisdom

That’s because the old guard were more nationalistic and the organisation of African unity played a key roll this trend vanished after the 1990s in which many African countries had its military leaders overthrown and a more western liberal world view became the norm

Imagine letting a Zambian whose country is de facto a Chinese colony to the point that Chinese is mandatory in their schools clown you about Somalia 🤦🏾‍♀️

Honestly, I feel for a lot of diaspora kids when they inevitably visit Somalia.

It’s an absolute dump, the entire country from top to bottom. You’ll guaranteed be depressed or even disappointed for the first two or three days.

But it grows on you, after a few weeks you wouldn’t want to be any other place on earth. Whenever I talk to my ajnabi friends I say Somalia is home because that’s what it feels like.
