There’s a truth to what she’s saying. Somalis have a habit in judging people online. Whether they identify as gaal or do things that’s outside the cultural norm. For example: if the person is with an ajnabi they believe is their place to gatekeep or if the person is doing things thats not acceptable in the culture/deen they believe they know the person (acting like they have some ownership of that person) and it’s their rights to excommunicate them or troll them.

This tribal mentality is crazy. But it’s common in every muslim groups: south Asian community (specifically Pakistanis), North Africans or MENA and the Middle Eastern Arab communities.

As a Somali man this is f*cked up. No one should be ashamed to claim Somali. Some member in our community are egotistical maniacs. They can’t judge their own lives. They only resort to judging others thinking that will help their projection issues. I wish they use this energy into helping our community instead of spamming online junk.

She made a storytime as a *somali* person. She presents herself as a spokesperson for somali people, she regularly uses somali hashtags etc. she goes out of her way to attract attention from that community

and she recieves criticisms from somalis on that basis.

More people should do this, it is strange to use somali hashtags for posts that have nothing to do with somalis tbh, especially when doing something unconventional.. normal somalis will not interact with that content but trolls will

What’s wrong with addressing FGM in public as if that’s not known as global issue. I think it’s good she’s brining awareness about it and the danger it brought to Somalia. I do agree she should keep in Somali. it’s not really a problem. It’s not like Somalia is sealed from that controversy.

I’m so sorry but we have alot of attentionseeking ”crashouts” who are unusually active on social media, ”regular” somalis with normal lives do not get this kind of visibility, this can easily skew perception of somalis. I think this is what makes people uneasy

I don’t think FGM is very smart to bring up outside of Africa, this is a hill im willing to die on. None of these ”activists” will ever do the kind of work that is required to end this practise, in fact they will most likely never go back home.

the only outcome is more stereotyping and attaching diaspora somalis to a practise that is largely alien to them
