Today I met an old Somali man that lives in a small seaside village called manarola, it’s one of the five villages in Cinque Terre, Italy. He told us he moved from Rome in the 90s, and been living in Italy since the mid 80s :dwill: The old man was working at the train station, he didn’t look like he had family or he would’ve mentioned it, maaskinka I hope he finds a way to get back home I wouldn’t want to live among that many gaalos.

Where is the weirdest place you have seen a Somali? And did you approach them? I always try to approach Somalis, especially older folks.

Not surprising, if you think about it.

From my family, I know it was common in the 70s-80s for people to go over to Italy for school and work. My parents have relatives who did, including women who went over as maids, and settled there. These were a section of the family who had relocated to Mogadishu prior. But mostly, even far much earlier than that, there are relatives who settled Wales/England.

That makes sense, we did meet couple of Somalis in Rome that lived there for a long time. Somalis usually find themselves in big cities which is why I was surprised by this old man living among Italians in a small village, we were wondering why he chose to
live there but didn’t want to intrude lol

I met a Somali family in Suva, Fiji and they owned a mini-mart and were thriving within the Fijian Islamic community. Their children seemed to be better educated than many Somali Aussies here, they attended a private school, they owned their own home in a middle class area, functioned as a strong family unit and yet, they thought the grass is greener on the other side and still harboured to migrate to Australia or New Zealand. I gave them a bleak picture of both Australia and New Zealand as a newly migrant from Africa and Muslims and the million + problems faced by the Somali communities there and they were very happy to what they made of themselves in Fiji. I've learnt that day, that most Somalis thrive better in a place without welfare.

Italy was an economic superpower during the 70s. Top 5 in the world. It wasn't uncommon for horners to go there and work or study.
