Somalis in banking/finance

Got my Cambridge rejection on UCAS a couple days ago :mjcry::mjcry::mjcry:

As a result, I pretty much know the university I’ll be going to in a couple months time after A Levels. I’ll be studying Economics and I was wondering if there are many Somalis in the finance industry (talking Big 4 or IBD) since most of the Somali graduates I’ve seen go into STEM. It could be that riba is haram so Somalis might be averse to the industry and stick to STEM

bit late for me since I’ve already been accepted onto the degree programme. Why?
You could switch after the first semester. Think about life after graduation, for example, in the employment market, there are over 3 million engineering jobs in the U.S, which could not be filled, as there is shortage.

Ahh. Don’t worry man. I’m in the UK at a target uni for IBD. Engineering doesn’t pay much over here. Even if I went into Big 4 Accounting I’d make more than an engineer

You need people like me
Yes, there are quite a few. Focus on getting a good spring week internship and doing well on the internship. Going to a target uni helps, use it to message Somali guys on LinkedIn who work at banks you’re interested in and just say you’d appreciate some advice - they’re very helpful. Learn soft skills too, ibd as a division attracts a certain personality type so you need to be very confident.

Thank you for goodwill. To be honest, a move to Saudi doesn’t seem all that bad. The firms there bend over backwards for people with US/UK degrees and passports
Best time to go to Gulf States is after you have had solid experience, and post grad. education. Besides, Gulf States are laying off people with a plan to reduce foreign workforce by 2030. I do not quite remember the %, but it is looking rather bleak. Do not let me discourage you though.

Postscript:
If you study finance, you could always work at the City, as a trader, provided you do not mind gambling, and working 20 hour shifts.

be careful sxb, many of the jobs in banking are haram as they deal with interest. Not all though, my dad also works in finance but his job doesn't include interest payments

Economics isn’t really useful unless you plan on starting a business or teaching that subject
nah you can basically do anything with an economics degree

its relevant for every sector. they all need financial analysts, whether it be a govt position, an oil company, a bank, a foods company, etc,
