Plenty are ashamed which is why they don’t speak it. If your parents are illiterate and don’t speak English, there’s no excuse not to know Somali.

There’s a difference between proficiency and native fluency. Also native speakers will always notice your accent but it doesn’t mean you’re not fluent. It’s definitely possible living in the west, you just need intensive immersion.

Are you saying someone who grew up in the diaspora can be fluent but will always have an accent that cab be perceived by those in from/in Somalia?

Not necessarily, but sometimes it’s the case. If you don’t make an effort and immerse yourself with native speakers and be open to criticism you will have mispronunciation problems.

Yeah I agree, that's the case for the majority of people. But sometimes, though quite rare, you don't have to make any conscious efforts to learn if your parents speak to you in Somali every since you were born. You learn it passively like you learn English.

If you don’t use it, you lose it though. Some spoke it fluently as a kid but lost it as they grew up.

What resources did you use bro? Af soomaaligeygu aad buu u liitaa.

Go back home. Or if you have grandparents hangout with them. :icon lol:

Any tips on trying to correct grammar errors besides reading articles written in Somali ?

Trying to become fluent before I get married inshallah.

Just like there are French immersion schools, you have to heavily immerse yourself in Somali. You can’t learn it from a book.

My adult family members only speak to me in Somali, ever since I was born, and naturally I would reply in Somali. That's how I became fluent with no accent.

Than when I got older I started reading the news in af-Soomaali, and I picked up a lot of vocab from that.

My advice would be to always reply to your parents and other Somali adults in Somali, and listen and read af-soomaali online.

My Grandparents are all gone. Plus, I don't have the luxury to just go back home for the sake of learning Somali. It's not like Somali is German or Spanish, with economic benefits.

Always reply to your parents and other adult relatives in Somali. Reading articles will help tremendously as well, so don't downplay that as a resource. Also listen to Somalia media, like the news and youtube videos.

It's not a major language but if your Somali isn't strong then if you have kids they probably won't have strong Somali skills either.

Dialects will screw you up in qurbaha kkkk. I had a lander girl say to me "saas camal waaye " & "fiiri, saas maahan":gucciwhat:. I've met koonfuri elders whose dialect is so informal & strange to me it sounds like a baby learning how to speak:russ:. Stay around your dialect or you'll be in limbo:pachah1:

Typical Northern chauvinism lol. You'd be surprised in the many different ways southern dialects are more authentic, original and older than northern Somali.

Yeah, but kids learning somali in the west will always question how good their somali is when they hear other dialects & compare, they'll get confused like the camal girl i know:icon lol:

But knowing better Somali than someone doesn't have anything to do with dialect. I know you consider your dialect to be correct Mr. Khaldaan. :icon lol:

P.S. How the hell does a lander girl say saas lee waaye? I said that once to my mum and she got so mad at me. :faysalwtf:
