Somali men traditionally wore a sarong-like garment called a macawis or macawiis, which was wrapped around the waist and tied at the waist or shoulder. The macawiis was often made of cotton or silk and came in a range of colors and patterns.

Over the macawiis, men would wear a shawl-like garment called a shiid, which was draped over the shoulders and sometimes worn over the head like a hood. The shiid was typically made of wool or cotton and was used to protect against the harsh Somali climate.

In addition to the macawiis and shiid, Somali men would also wear a vest or shirt called a garbasaar or jilbab, which was made of cotton or silk and often embroidered or embellished with intricate designs.

Traditional Somali clothing for men also included a variety of accessories, such as a turban-like head covering called a dhaanto or koofiyad, as well as leather sandals called jilwaad or gorgorad.

Overall, traditional Somali clothing for men before the 1900s was characterized by loose, flowing garments made of natural fibers, often decorated with intricate patterns and embroidery.

Thawb is part of Somali culture at this point. Pakistanis have their own thawb styles, west Africans too. People need to realize cultures influence each other

They lie me when I say that our people are afflicted with great ignorance, two days ago I went to the market in search of a good turban, and…man, instead of naming the “Thobes” and the “turbans” by their normal names, these ignorant people call them “Islamic clothes”. Bruh, They themselves do not know what their ancestors used to wear.

They wallow in their ignorance like a child playing in the mud; You find that one wearing Emirati clothes, another Pakistani, another Yemeni, and another Moroccan, because in the end, as they think: these are Islamic clothes, so what is the difference? We only have Macawis anyway!

They’ve judged me without knowing my intentions
