There aren’t any Somali immigrating through that route. The only way to claim asylum is to do so by entering the country illegally first. Somalis don’t even go through the med boat route as the small boat statistics in the UK show which nationalities do. Even though today Asians particularly Chinese Americans are often portrayed as the "model minority," it wasn’t always this way. It's important to remember that Chinese Americans were once subjected to intense xenophobia, racism, and dehumanizing caricature by white Americans.

They were frequently the targets of openly exclusionary, and at times even genocidal, languagetold to "go back home" and repeatedly reminded that they were not truly American.

This hostility was triggered by a familiar context: Chinese and Japanese immigrants fleeing poverty, war, and hunger in search of opportunity. As their countries grew stronger economically, their image in the U.S. shifted, and immigration slowed or changed through self-selection. Early Chinese American communities built businesses, organized themselves, and paved the way for a new public image.

It’s also worth noting they were subjected to the same "Middleman Minority" resentment that Somalis experience today resented for our visibility in business, accused of "stealing" jobs or opportunities, and sometimes targeted with violence.

Every immigrant group has gone through cycles of media and political scrutiny , the Chinese, Japanese, Jewish, Irish, and others. But they made the most of America, used its systems to advance themselves, and didn’t turn their backs on their identity.

Look at Italian Americans: despite facing intense backlash in the early 20th century, they stayed rooted in both their American and Italian identities. They sent millions in remittances and played a major role in supporting their homeland from abroad.

In 2013 alone, Somali Americans sent $570 million back to Somalia and that figure is likely far higher now in 2025, not including direct foreign investment.

America truly remains the land of opportunity , it’s up to us to seize it and leverage it to benefit both our communities here and our homeland.

Somalia is far from a "dumpster country." Despite decades of hardship, Somalis have rebuilt critical sectors from the ground up. The country now leads in fintech adoption, telecom innovation, and decentralized energy systems. It's becoming a regional trade hub, with growing manufacturing, fishing, and agricultural sectors. That kind of resilience and development is anything but failure and the results are starting to speak for themselves.

As for Tahriib, it has been on the decline. One of the major causes was the mismatch between education and market demand, and that's now being addressed to improve opportunities for youth.

What you're doing is framing Somali identity entirely through the lens of online racists, people who will never accept us no matter what we do. These narratives aren't about facts; they're about justifying xenophobia. Despite arriving with almost nothing, Somalis have shown more upward mobility in one generation than most communities who came under similar conditions.

What I find ironic is that all the anger and resentment thrown at Somalis on this forum and social media just becomes fuel for us.

Second-generation Somalis and youth who arrive in the West actually have fertility rates similar to the native population around 2 children per woman. That’s been documented in places like Norway and elsewhere. So the whole “high fertility” panic is baseless when it comes to diaspora Somalis.

Fertility drops with urbanization, education, and economic pressures same as it has with every other group. We live under the same conditions as everyone else.

Somalis in Kenya actively debunk @Dhere ideas that xenophobia or racism originate from not being upstanding citizens. Just like in Somalia, where crime rates are low, the Somali-majority regions in Kenya NFD areas like Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera consistently have the lowest crime rates in the entire country.
